‘4 of 10 babies born in Philippines illegitimate ‘

MANILA, Philippines – Four of every 10 babies born in the country are illegitimate and one of them came from a teenage mother, the latest data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) revealed today.

Out of the total 711,079 illegitimate babies recorded, 64.6 percent came from Luzon while 11.2 percent live births were born to mothers under 20 years old.

An average of 4,782 births occurs daily, which is around 199 births per hour, or three babies per minute, the NSO pointed out.

The top three regions with the highest number of live births were in Luzon area, namely, CALABARZON, National Capital Region, and Central Luzon with 204,148.

The NSO also noted that three out of four births are medically attended by either by a physician, a nurse or a midwife. The percentage of medically attended births increased from previous years value by 70.9 percent.

Meantime, the number of deaths in the country also increased with disease of the heart as the top leading cause of death.

Latest NSO data revealed that heart disease claimed 100,908 total death occurrences. Cerebrovascular disease (56,670) came second in rank, followed by malignant neoplasm or commonly called “cancer” (47,732).

Out of the total 480,820 deaths in the country, about two-thirds or 322,612 were not medically attended.
