ADB to help craft conversion program for jeeps, buses
The Department of Energy, with the help of the Asian Development Bank and the Development Academy of the Philippines, is finalizing the “Alternative Fuels Roadmap” that will see existing transport vehicles run on other fuels than diesel.
Meant to diversify the transport sector’s fuel mix, the Alternative Fuels Roadmap will help cut costly crude and fuel imports and reduce the country’s vulnerability to volatile global oil prices.
According to Energy Undersecretary Jose M. Layug Jr., the Aquino administration has several fuel-conversion projects, some of which have already started.
The DOE, in particular, wanted to convert more than 2,000 diesel-run jeepneys to run using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas–the cost of which could reach P200,000 for each unit of jeepney and as such require a special financing facility. It was earlier reported that the DOE was working with mutlilateral agencies willing to lend money at better terms.
