Philippine download speed found below par

THE SPEED by which Internet users in the Philippines download files pales in comparison with those of many other economies, a study by a file-sharing software provider showed.

Specifically, results of the study by Pando Networks showed download speed in the Philippines averaging 213 kilobytes per second (KBps) fell below global average of 580 KBps.

The study, conducted from Jan. 1-June 30, was based on 27 million downloads using Pando services on 20 million computers in 224 economies, a summary of the survey said.

The top 15 countries in terms of fastest downloads were South Korea with 2,202 KBps; Romania, 1,909 KBps; Bulgaria, 1,611 KBps; Lithuania, 1,463 KBps; Latvia, 1,377 KBps; Japan, 1,364 KBps; Sweden, 1,234 KBps; Ukraine, 1,190 KBps; Denmark, 1,020 KBps; Hong Kong, 992 KBps; Netherlands, 934 KBps; Finland, 917 KBps; Moldova, 915 KBps; Taiwan, 860 KBps; and Norway, 801 KBps.

“We saw high speeds in markets such as Eastern Europe, where focus on infrastructure development and favorable geography promote a higher level of connectivity,” Pando Chief Executive Officer Robert Levitan said in a press release.

At the bottom of the list were the Democratic Republic of Congo with just 13 KBps, Central African Republic with 14 KBps, and Comoros with 23 KBps.

A partial list of other economies in the study showed those above the global average included Switzerland with 654 KBps; Germany with 647 KBps; United States, 616 KBps; France, 606 KBps and Great Britain, 599 KBps.

Economies below the global average but still faster than the Philippines included Canada with 579 KBps; Turkey, 490 KBps; Poland, 432 KBps; Spain, 394 KBps; Australia, 348 KBps; Israel, 340 KBps; China, 245 KBps; Mexico, 237 KBps; and Saudi Arabia, 216 KBps.

Only Argentina (132 KBps) and Brazil (105 KBps) were shown slower than the Philippines.
