Ex-Philippine president’s husband, 18 others accused of graft in helicopter deal

MANILA, Philippines — Three Philippine senators have filed graft complaints against former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s husband and 18 former government and police officials.

Sen. Teofisto Guingona Jr. and two others accused Jose Miguel Arroyo of passing off two helicopters he allegedly owned as new and selling them to the national police with the help of several officials in 2009, when his wife was still in power.

Guingona said Thursday the allegedly corrupt deal defrauded the government of a large amount of money.

Jose Miguel Arroyo has denied owning and selling the two helicopters to the police force.

The ex-president and her husband have also been implicated in other corruption scandals but have denied any wrongdoing.
