MANILA, Philippines — The smelly toilets, cramped seats and dilapidated buildings at Manila’s 30-year-old international airport are finally getting a facelift.
Philippine President Benigno Aquino III has confirmed that a $23.8 million upgrade is under way to expand the arrival area, add multilevel parking lots and improve facilities at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, named after his father, who was assassinated on the tarmac in 1983.
Aquino led a quick inspection of the airport late Thursday and even peeked into a ladies’ room after checking that no one was using it.
Travel surveys have voted the airport among the world’s worst. Philippine tourism officials say it is hurting the country’s reputation and are planning to increase the number of visitors.
