Binay pulls away, Marcos rises in latest survey

VICE-PRESIDENT Jejomar C. Binay has pulled away from his closest contender in the presidential race, Senator Grace Poe, according to the latestBusinessWorld-Social Weather Stations (BW-SWS) pre-election survey, that also bared Ms. Poe, Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Manuel “Mar” A. Roxas II and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte in a statistical tie.
At second place were Ms. Poe with 24% (from 26% in December), Mr. Roxas with 21% (from 22% previously), and Mr. Duterte with a flat 20%.
‘MAKING HIMSELF SEEN’
Edmund S. Tayao, political science professor at the University of Santo Tomas, said the January survey “already reflects” the effects of campaign strategies and styles of the candidates.
“In the case of Vice-President Binay, he has been going around, following the traditional campaign style, and making himself seen,” Mr. Tayao said in a phone interview.
Mr. Tayao also observed that Ms. Poe as well as Messrs. Roxas and Duterte — in a “statistical tie” in the latest survey — have been relying more on media to reach out to potential voters.
“All of them have political ads,” Mr. Tayao said.
‘SIGNIFICANT’ IMPROVEMENT
In the vice-presidential race, Senator Francis Joseph “Chiz” G. Escudero remained respondents’ top choice with 28% (though from 30% in December), followed by Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos, Jr. with 25% (a six-point increase from 19% in December), LP bet Camarines Sur Rep. Maria Leonor “Leni” G. Robredo with 17% (from December’s 19%) and Senator Alan Peter S. Describing the improvement in Mr. Marcos’ numbers as “significant”, Mr. Tayao said “[h]e is gaining ground because of name recall.”
Leading the senatorial bets were Sen. Vicente C. Sotto III (56% in January from 59% in December), former senator Panfilo M. Lacson (49% from 46%), Sen. Ralph G. Recto (46% from 56%), former food security presidential assistant Francis N. Pangilinan (46% from 56%), Senate President Franklin M. Drilon (43%), Sen. Sergio D. Osmeña III (42%), former senator Juan Miguel F. Zubiri (39%), Sarangani Rep. Emmmanuel D. Pacquiao (37%), former Justice secretary Leila M. de Lima (33%) and former senator Richard J. Gordon (31%).
The survey showed only 32% of respondents chose a full slate of 12 names, averaging 7.9 names each.
