Chile seeks geothermal firms

THE GOVERNMENT of Chile is seeking more Filipino geothermal companies to develop geothermal resources in their country, the Energy department said.

“In a bilateral meeting with Chile, they said one of their big issues is in [developing] geothermal [resources]. They are seeking more Filipino companies to go to Chile and develop,” Energy Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras said in a statement.

“They are asking for assistance government to government, to brief them on how our system works. They want to know how we give out geothermal contracts and what has to be done. They will also be here to track more Filipino geothermal companies to go there,” he said.

Mr. Almendras noted that the government of Chile acknowledged that Philippines as the second largest developer of geothermal resource.

“They also believe the Philippine experience and technology is more appropriate for them than that of the US for good reason: one is weather and the other is economics,” he said.

Earlier, EDC said it is firming up its international expansion as it decided to pursue developing several geothermal exploration concession areas, particularly in Chile.

The company has been awarded three geothermal exploration concessions by the Chilean Ministry of Energy. It also plans to pursue other concession areas in its bid to develop the first geothermal power plant in Chile, as it has four pending applications for geothermal concessions in that country. EDC is the Philippines’ largest integrated producer of geothermal power and the acknowledged global leader in wet steam technology.
