THE COUNTRY’s main business chamber has been tapped to finalize a Mindanao Policy Agenda that will be presented to President Benigno S. C. Aquino III during the 20th Mindanao Business Conference to be held in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur on Sept. 7-9, the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) said in recent statements.

MinDA, represented by its chairman, Luwalhati R. Antonino, and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, represented by its chairman, Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis, Jr., signed the memorandum of agreement involved on Thursday last week during consultations at the Traders Hotel in Manila, GEM said.
The envisioned agenda aims to identify factors that will drive Mindanao’s development, particularly in the fields of power, agriculture, mining and transport, as well as commitments needed from the government, the business sector and other stakeholders.
The draft Mindanao Policy Agenda that resulted from regional consultations held in Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro and General Santos cities identified core development concerns, including the need to: lure new investments in power generation and implement reforms in power rate setting as ways to develop the island’s energy sufficiency; improve support for agricultural production, processing and marketing; enhance transport connectivity across regions; upgrade the quality of the island’s work force; encourage the growth of micro enterprises; and develop a tourism master plan for the entire island.
