Veteran lawyer, Atty. Bienvenido Laguesma, was appointed as Secretary of the Department of Labor and Employment, also serving as the Vice Chairperson of the Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees on 30 June 2022.
Sec. Laguesma served as a public administrator, starting his career in government service as Administrator of the National Conciliation and Mediation Board in 1987, then as Undersecretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) till 1996. He also served as Presidential Assistant at the Office of the President from 1996 to 1998, before serving as DOLE secretary until 2001.
Sec. Laguesma is a practicing lawyer and serves as a Senior Partner at Laguesma Magsalin Consulta and Gastardo Law Offices. He is a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) serving as its Director and Secretary in Quezon City from 2005 to 2009. He is also a member of the Philippine Bar Association and Quezon City Trial Lawyers, and was president of the Rotary Club of Manila back in 2008.
Sec. Laguesma completed Bachelor of Arts in Political Science degree from the Lyceum of the Philippines in 1971, his Juris Doctor Program in Ateneo de Manila College of Law in 1975, and his post-graduate studies as a Colombo Scholar in Administrative Course at the Royal Institute of Public Administration in London, UK in 1985. He was also a graduate of Career Executive Service Development Program, Session XIX at Development Academy of the Philippines in 1984, with the highest CESO rank.
