Japanese firms not particularly keen to expand

THE PHILIPPINES does not particularly figure in the expansion plans of Japanese firms, which have tagged economies such as China, Thailand, Indonesia and even India as their main preferences.

Details of a recently released Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) survey showed that more overseas-based Japanese firms were considering expanding in the next three years or so, at 73.2% from 69% previously.

Both large-scale firms and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were particularly keen to expand sales operations in China, at 57% and 49.9%, respectively. China, in fact, led all expansion indicators, from production, research and development to distribution.
