Kennon Road may be privatized – DPWH

MANILA, Philippines – The operation of Kennon Road, which leads to Baguio City, may be privatized, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said yesterday.

“We are looking at what is the best option for government so that we could improve the maintenance of Kennon Road and riding comfort of motorists and commuters,” DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson said.

Singson said the privatization of Kennon Road would not be a burden for motorists since they would have the option to use Marcos Highway if they do not like to pay the toll.

It was reported that the DPWH collects P15 from vehicles passing Kennon Road.

Singson said that with the privatization of Kennon Road, maintenance would no longer be the problem of the government.

“We would set standards for the operator,” he added.

DPWH-Cordillera Autonomous Region director engineer Edilberto Carabbacan said they have completed the bidding for the pre-feasibility study of the project.

Carabaccan said a decision on whether the privatization would push through would be known in August.
