Donohue Calls on Japan to Follow Announcement With A Strong,
Sustained Commitment to Market-Opening Reforms

HONOLULU, HI—U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue issued the following statement today following Prime Minister Noda’s statement that Japan intends to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations:

“Prime Minister Noda’s announcement sends a positive message to the United States and other participants in the negotiations.

“It is important that this announcement be followed by a strong and sustained commitment to market-opening reforms and a willingness to put all issues on the table.

“If Japan is ready to engage in the TPP negotiations on the same terms as the other participants, then its goal of becoming a TPP partner should be favorably considered.

“A comprehensive, ambitious, and enforceable market-opening TPP has the potential to create an explosion of trade and new American jobs and would demonstrate continued U.S. leadership across the region. It is an exciting vision which, on the right terms, should make room for Japan, the world’s third largest economy and a vital economic and security partner of the United States.”

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
